Dover Castle!!

I was so excited to see my first castle!!!! I expected the castle to be this huge fancy elegant palace. Little did I know, this castle was huge and was spread out with towers and lots of grass in between and then the inner building! So I was right about the huge part! The view standing outside of the castle walls was beautiful. You could see the rolling hills in the distance, lush grass and trees.

As I made my way towards the castle there was a sign saying “secret tunnels this way.” I couldn’t help but thinking of Nacho Libre the whole time! After wondering what they used all the tunnels for I decided to look it up and this is some of what I found out about the secret war time tunnels. After outbreak of WWII in 1939 the tunnels were converted first into an air-raid shelter and then later into a military command centre and underground hospital. In 1941 a military telephone exchange was installed and was the underground headquarters. Later the tunnels were used as shelter for the Regional Seats of Government in the event of a nuclear attack. They later discarded this plan, realizing that the chalk on the Dover cliffs would not provide sufficient protection from radiation and the poor condition of the tunnels themselves.













After I saw that my group went inside the castle. So we made our way up the stairs and finally came to a fairly big room, where some actors were performing a little enactment of the queen and king! After talking to them we went up to the very top of the castle, where we could see almost everything from up there!

We then went to this museum that talked about The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Formation History, where they had stories about soldiers and what life was like on a ship a long time ago. They also had tons of awards and some of their traditional uniforms on display.

After we had to go back onto the bus and make our way down the hill to a beach (not really a beach, just a lot of rocks.) The beach didn’t smell very good; but that was mostly because there were millions of dead oysters lying just above the shore! Also when we were there we could see the white cliffs of Dover! They were so cool, huge and white!
